Analysis Of Truman Capote s Cold Blood - 1622 Words
The usually quiet and lonesome village of Holcomb resides peacefully until the unthinkable happens. During mid-November of 1959 a family of four is shot in their own home. The brutal death of the Clutters creates a sense of uncertainty and paranoia over the village. Truman Capote writes on the tragic story in his novel, In Cold Blood. When found, Perry Smith and Dick Hickock are appointed a trial and face Kansasââ¬â¢s death penalty. However, questions arise about the defendantsââ¬â¢ punishment in relation to their mental capacity, specifically Perry Smithââ¬â¢s. Perry deserves to receive special consideration because his childhood causes his mental instability, which allows him to be easily persuaded and not in control of his actions. Perry endures aâ⬠¦show more contentâ⬠¦As a result, making him seem as a malicious and spiteful human being. They claim that others with similar childhoods exemplify the ability to overcome their situation and appear successful in life, so Perry should too. Moreover, they use Perryââ¬â¢s sister, Barbara, as an example of a person, who demonstrates the ability to appear as successful and conquer her childhood. However, it proves to be unfair to compare the childhood of Perry with the childhood of others. Each child and how they are affected by their situation appears as unique. Also, the argument of Barbaraââ¬â¢s ability to overcome her childhood is overshadowed by the fates of his other three siblings and the comments she makes about her own future. When reflecting on her siblings doomful fates, she expresses feeling of torment as she ââ¬Å"thought that in time, she too, would be overwhelmed: go mad, or contract an incurable illness, or in a fire lose all she valued-home, husband, and childrenâ⬠(183). What makes me black Essay Example For Students
What makes me black Essay Iââ¬â¢ve pondered the thought of what makes me black, and what makes others what they are. I spent a day evaluating my surroundings, and racking my brain. But I still have not come to the conclusion of what makes me black. Is it the box on applications that I check, is it my membership to predominately ââ¬Å"Blackâ⬠sorority, or is it how my hair kinks up when it is wet. Is it the way I am followed in a department store, or is it because of the vaulger names I have been called?Like nigger or tar baby.Is it because of the pigment of my skin or the dark color of my gums when I smile? Or maybe even the reflection I see in the mirror. Is it how others perceive me or is it how I perceive myself? One things for sure people of my own ââ¬Å" so called race call me white, but on the other hand people who associate themselves as white see me to be black as night. I once heard someone say you are whom you associate with; well if that were true I guess I would be a bunch ingredients bl ended together. Are these the characteristics that form my identity? I could go on for days, but are those the things that really make me black? All right enough of the games; I will tell you why I am black. Or could be I am really white?I guess now I need to reevaluate. What makes me white? I spent all of my time evaluating why I am black; leaving no time to evaluate why I am white. I have got it I am white because of the power advantage I still have over blacks in the year 2000. Or is it how I can walk into any store without a dime and walkout as if I had a million? It is easy to take what I need from an ignorant society who is always blaming blacks. Who would ever suspect the innocent little white girl definitely not the white salesclerk? Is it the way I am able to walk down any city street day or night and not accused of wrongdoing? Or is the way I am able to sit in my car after being pulled over for a speeding ticket. Maybe it is the way my face is not plastered all over the ne wspaper and television after I commit a crime. Is it the way I am able to gain access to any prestigious college without ever being asked if I can afford the tuition? Are these the characteristics that form my identity? All right all right enough of the game; I will tell you why I am white. Or it be that I am neither black nor white but a person. Is this how my identity is formed? Who am I and who are you? What makes me black and what makes you white? Whatever happened to a human being a person? It seems to me as if our society is caught up in classifications. Check here if you are male or female. Check here if you are single or married. Check here if you have dependent, and so on.Everywhere I turn there is another classification. I ask why buy in to this crap. What advantages have you gotten by saying your are one thing when your another. So, I ask everyone to stand up and be proud of whom he or she is. You are a person, an individual, and you are special. Why? God made us all different, so let us all be proud of whom we are. Now when you see me and my head is raised high; you will know why.So, the next time you ask me what race I am; Iââ¬â¢ll be proud to say part of the human race. .u56f92d4c2deaac86a0c830477a2d2813 , .u56f92d4c2deaac86a0c830477a2d2813 .postImageUrl , .u56f92d4c2deaac86a0c830477a2d2813 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u56f92d4c2deaac86a0c830477a2d2813 , .u56f92d4c2deaac86a0c830477a2d2813:hover , .u56f92d4c2deaac86a0c830477a2d2813:visited , .u56f92d4c2deaac86a0c830477a2d2813:active { border:0!important; } .u56f92d4c2deaac86a0c830477a2d2813 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u56f92d4c2deaac86a0c830477a2d2813 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u56f92d4c2deaac86a0c830477a2d2813:active , .u56f92d4c2deaac86a0c830477a2d2813:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u56f92d4c2deaac86a0c830477a2d2813 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u56f92d4c2deaac86a0c830477a2d2813 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u56f92d4c2deaac86a0c830477a2d2813 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u56f92d4c2deaac86a0c830477a2d2813 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u56f92d4c2deaac86a0c830477a2d2813:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u56f92d4c2deaac86a0c830477a2d2813 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u56f92d4c2deaac86a0c830477a2d2813 .u56f92d4c2deaac86a0c830477a2d2813-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u56f92d4c2deaac86a0c830477a2d2813:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Forgiveness EssayBibliography:

War with Mexico Essays - United States, Presidency Of James K. Polk
War with Mexico James K. Polk has declared war with Mexico because of the border dispute . On the border of Texas and Mexico, American troops led by Zachary Taylor were shot on American soil from Mexican troops. James Matthew was one of the witnesses of this incident. All he heard were cries of agony and gunshots as Mexican forces kill innocent men. In Polk's war address to Congress he states, "Mexico has passed the boundary of the United States , has invaded our territory, and shed American blood upon the American soil The two nations are now at war." Kearny led his forces to take over San Pasqual to take over Northern Mexican land. He marched in and he conquered all of Northern Mexico without a single causality. While Kearny had his hands tied up, Scott leads his forces to the port Vera Cruz. After Santa Anna was demoted after losing Texas he then rises back to power as a general. The two sides fought in two battles both leading Santa Anna's forces retreating. Scott then leads his forces to Mexico City. While Scott maybe excited his troops aren't so much, so Scott arouses them with a speech after six months of walking Scott reaches the gates of Mexico City. On September 13 Scott gives the order to fire on Mexico City. On September 14 Scott has taken over Mexico City. In February of 1848 the war is over by the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo . Mexico agreed to give the United States all of their Northern Territory for only fifthteen million dollars this became known as the Mexican Cession . The area given to us would be separated into six different states which include: California, Nevada, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, and Wyoming. The new border is at the Rio Grande between Mexico and the United States. California After the Eustach party found gold in western California, flocks of families moved west to get the slice of richness. Because of this find a huge epidemic was going around called Gold fever , and the only cure for it was gold. A forty- niner family was granted this title for leaving home in 1849 . The Donner party was one out of the eighty thousand families that were looking for gold. This party was unfortunate because they poorly planned their trip which caused them getting stuck in the Rockies for the winter. Luckily there was a shack they found and decided to wait it all out. After all their food ran out they went down the path of cannibalism when a rescue party found them all they could see was human and dog bones on the floor. They were then led to a mining town in California. All they could see in the mining town was trading posts, a bank, and a medical base. They went to the nearby bank and asked for claim twenty-six because it was a perfect p lace for mining because of the river nearby. Once arriving to their claim after a good night's sleep they started panning for gold. They noticed that the Chinese was also here, and they looked very depressed. People were throwing stones at them, and said things like get of our land Asians." After a hard day's work they found twelve ounces of gold. They then went to the trading post, and they saw Levi Strauss and his denim jeans. He said they're worth six ounces of gold, so they bought a pair and was on their way to a rich future. Inventions Galore The industrial industry is skyrocketing, but the four inventions that changed this the most were the steel tip plow, the telegraph, steam powered factories, and the invention of Morse code . The steel tip plow was invented by John Deere he wanted to be able to build something to plow the tough soil of the prairies versus the soft rich soil of the east coast of the states. He built this in Illinois by trying his first plow which was a saw. The telegraph and Morse code was built by Samuel Morse. The telegraph was built to be able to send electric pulses quicker and longer ranges than the

One-dimensional Characters Lack Depth and Never Grow
One-dimensional Characters Lack Depth and Never Grow In literature, as in life, people often see growth, change, and internal conflict carried out in a single character. The term one-dimensional character in a book review or story refers to a character who lacks depth and who never seems to learn or grow. When a character is one-dimensional, he or she does not demonstrate a sense of learning in the course of a story. Authors may use such a character to highlight a certain trait, and usually, it is an undesirable one. The Role of the Flat Character in a Story One-dimensional characters are also known as flat characters or characters in fictional stories that do not change much from the start of the story to the end. It is thought that these type of characters have little to no emotional depth. Their role is often to highlight the main character, and they typically hold a simple and small perspective about life or the situation in the story. Their character is often a stereotype and may simply be used as a literary device to keep the narrative moving. Examples of Popular One-dimensional Characters A one-dimensional character can be summed up in a certain trait or characteristic. In All Quiet on the Western Front, for example, Paul Bumers high school teacher, Kantorek, maintains the role of a one-dimensional character, because he maintains a sense of idealistic patriotism despite his encounters with war atrocities. Additional one-dimension characters from famous books and plays include: Benvolio from Romeo and Juliet (By William Shakespeare)Elizabeth Proctor fromà The Crucibleà (By Arthur Miller)Gertrude fromà Hamletà (William Shakespeare)Miss Maudie fromà To Kill a Mockingbirdà (By Harper Lee) How to Avoid Writing One-dimension Characters in a Story Characters that lack internal conflict or multiple facets to their personality are often dubbed as flat or one-dimensional characters. This is often seen as a bad thing in a story, especially for first-time writers, when all of the characters are one-dimensional. However, if there are one or two characters that are simplistic in nature for a reason, it may not be perceived as a negative trait. As long as an author usesà one-dimensional characters correctly, and with deliberate intention, there is nothing wrong with it. Often, a narrative is most successful with a combination of flat and rounded characters. With that said,à its important to have strong character development overall to create rounded characters that have some depth to them. This helps characters imitate being a real human being. Being able to relate to characters in this way, as a reader, makes them far more interesting and realistic. Furthermore, the complexity that a character holds reveals the challenges they go through and shows the many sides of them, which reveals what their life is truly like to readers. Tips for Creating Characters With Depth Writing better characters for fiction readers help immerse them in a narrative. Below are several tips for developing multi-faceted characters: Allow characters to hold strong opinions.à Giving characters a mix of relatable features, such as positive traits, along with character flaws, like mistakes and fears, will keep them well-rounded.Share the motivations and desires of the characters through their thoughts, actions, and obstacles, such as other characters.Give some mystery to characters. Throwing too much at the reader at once is not realistic. Treat characters like a person the reader is meeting for the first time, and allow them to develop over the course of the story.

Manifest Destiny Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Manifest Destiny - Essay Example The originally-thought of as divine destiny to help other nations became an intense selfish purpose to divide and conquer other nations, not just northward, which justified the original term ââ¬Å"continentalismâ⬠but also westward, or the whole world ultimately. This belief became a source of division among the American nation, particularly on the issue of ââ¬Å"All Oregon or Nothingâ⬠. During the Anglo-American Convention of 1818 which discussed the joint occupation by the United States and Great Britain of the Oregon Country, the British government refused the idea of then President John Tyler to divide the Oregon Country along the 49th parallel. Instead, the British suggested that a boundary line along Columbia River be made. This was objected to by the advocates of Manifest Destiny. They wanted the whole Oregon Country instead of sharing it with the British. They demanded that annexation be made (otherwise known as 54degrees 40ââ¬â¢N). Then Presidential candidate James Polk proposed to divide the Oregon Country along the 49th parallel. Again, the British refused the proposal. Advocates of Manifest Destiny cried out for ââ¬Å"The Fifty-Four Forty or None!â⬠When Polk became President, he insinuated to terminate the joint occupation agreement. Thus, the British had no option but to accede to the proposal of dividing Oregon Country along the 49th parallel. The Oregon Treaty of 1846 was born

The Myth's of Innovation - Essay Example The Apple team realized that there was a potential to improve on the design of existing digital music players using existing technology. The iPod wasnââ¬â¢t developed as the result of a sudden epiphany; it was a product of the steady design process to refine the digital music player. The development of the iPod shows that good ideas are not hard to find. The important components that make the iPod work were all taken off the shelf (Grossman 68). The FireWire connector that allowed data to be transferred to the iPod much faster than the USB connection used by the rival Nomad was existing technology from Apple. The hard drive for the device was developed by Toshiba without any idea what such a small hard drive could be used for. The battery had already been developed by Sony for cell phones. The iPod was not developed by some lone inventor. A team of designers at Apple worked on the device and used components developed by teams of engineers at other companies (Grossman 66). While th e iPod has become a popular electronic device, it also shows that innovation is not always good. The popularity of digital music players has created problems for music producers due to rampant electronic piracy. The Internet was originally created as a network of computers for the military. With the threat of a nuclear attack during the Cold War, the Internet was developed to be a robust computer communications network (Berners-Lee 80). The Internet was not the product of some epiphany. It was steadily developed over several decades before becoming what it is today. Despite being initially developed for military applications, the Internet eventually became a popular computer network for personal and commercial usage. The Internet was not created by some lone inventor. Many teams of individuals worked on developing the network protocols (Berners-Lee 81). These teams worked on developing the Internet over several decades, and these teams worked towards many different outcomes during t his time as the network slowly transitioned from a military network to a predominantly civilian network. Many of the developments in the Internet over the years havenââ¬â¢t been a bottom up approach of the best ideas winning. Many of the changes have been enforced in a top down manner to force users to adopt new network protocols (Berners-Lee 81). When changes were not the result of top down pressure, innovation in the Internet was not based on solving an existing problem. Instead, the Internet was frequently a solution in search of a problem. Much of the content on the Internet was created to attract ad revenue instead of being the product of the communication possibilities in the new medium (Berners-Lee 84). Although it accounts for a sizeable portion of the bandwidth, the Internet wasnââ¬â¢t created to stream movies, music, pornography, and e-mail spam. Those applications were developed to use the potential of the Internet. The zipper is one of those devices that was invent ed independently several times until it caught on. But once it did catch on, the zipper dominated the market in clothing fasteners. The independent discoveries of the zipper show that good ideas are not hard to find (Stringer 18). If the idea was so hard to come up with, multiple people would not have invented it independently. Despite the problems with the zipper after years of use, the convenience factor allowed it to eventually beat out the button that has been around for thousands of years. The difficulty faced by the zipper
